Hi, everyone! So, I’ve been pretty candid about the fact that I’m a student at UC Berkeley in California. It’s my second year here, and I’m actually more than halfway done because I’m graduating a year early. Looking back to when I was applying to college, I remember my expectations of college were so far from what I found the experience to actually be like. I I thought it’d be fun to show you all what a typical college student’s day is like!
7:30 a.m. // The Alarm Goes Off
With the familiar twinkling jingle emitted from my iPhone, I’m signaled to get up — a process that on some mornings, can be the absolute bane of my existence. I’m not a big fan of setting multiple alarms, and at most, I’ll set one alarm to go off 5 minutes after the initial alarm. But I really force myself to get up after the second alarm. First on the list is checking my phone, usually to see any missed messages and also check the stats on the Instagram I posted the evening before. On this day, I don’t have class until 9:30 a.m., but I love not feeling rushed in the morning — hence the early wake-up call.
7:45 a.m. // Breakfast & Pack Lunch
I whip myself up some breakfast (recently, it’s been this mug cake recipe!) and coffee (very much so a must!!). My house is located a solid 20-minute walk from the center of campus, so it’s not ideal for me to head back here for lunch, seeing as I only have an hour-and-a-half gap to eat. I decide to make my lunch to-go, which today is avocado toast with spinach, and this bagel seasoning. I bring some trail mix and a few pieces of fruit for some snacks. I check my email and take another look at the paper I’ve been working on that’s due next week to kill some time.
8:40 a.m. // Get Ready
I make my bed and start to get ready — today, I’ll be going to the gym in the evening (sometimes, I bring workout clothes to change into if I want to go earlier!) and I’m studying with a friend after class, so I go for jeans, a flowery tank, and pull my hair back with a pink bow.
9:20 a.m. // Class
I grab my backpack and meet outside with one of my friends — we’re in the same class and always walk together! Berkeley classes always start at “Berkeley time,” which is 10 minutes after the formal start time so though the class “starts” at 9:30 a.m., it actually starts at 9:40 a.m. We walk through campus and arrive at our building. I flip open my notebook (I take notes by hand, not on a computer!) and settle in for lecture.
11:00 a.m. // Lunch & Work
Class ends (it’s a history class about the Holocaust taught by one of the greatest scholars in the field, and the material tends to be pretty heavy). I walk out with my friend and normally head to the library, though because it’s been warm out, I’ve been studying outside lately. I work on homework, new posts, and other obligations during this time while munching on my lunch.
Squirrels are EVERYWHERE at Berkeley, and I often have to fend off the bold little guys, otherwise they’ll steal my lunch!
How gorgeous are these pink blooms?! Berkeley has been overflowing with them lately, thanks to the springy weather we’ve been having.
12:25 p.m. // Class
It’s time to head to my next class — a seminar about Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s. I pack up my stuff and make the trek!
2:00 p.m. // Study with Friend
Class adjourns, and I meet up with my friend at one of my favorite coffee spots. She also doesn’t have any class after 2 p.m., so we always try to hang out. I grab a cappuccino, we chat for 20 minutes, and then get straight to work.
4:00 p.m. // Snack Time
We both get a little restless (and hungry!) and decide that’s a good enough study sesh for the day. I head back to my house, eat a light snack of hummus and snap peas, and tidy up everything.
4:30 p.m. // Work Out
I change into workout clothes and head down to the school gym, which is about a 20-minute walk from my house. Normally, I try to do classes but today, I’m itching to run, so I go on the treadmill (at varying speeds and altitudes) for 35 minutes. I do a few ab exercises in the stretch room, and after I feel thoroughly exhausted, I head to my sorority house for some dinner.
5:30 p.m. // Dinner
Chi O has dinner everyday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. everyday, so you really have to plan your schedule around it. I don’t eat at the house every day, and today I’m sticking with the salad bar.
6:30 p.m. // Shower, PJs, Relax
I shower and get into my pajamas (the best!). I decide to work a little more on YC, and then finish up one last reading assignment. I start to feel tired and want to digress, so I allow myself 20 minutes of Netflix. Today, it’s the Great British Bake-Off (talked about here!).
11:30 p.m. // Bed
I get ready for bed, read a few pages of my “fun,” not-school-required book (I’m working through The Little Paris Bookshop!), and then it’s lights out. I aim to get to bed before midnight to be ready for the next day!
Sometimes, I have meetings or other commitments throughout the day, but this is a good picture of what a typical day for me is like! A huge thank you to my roommate — who gave up her afternoon to shadow me for the day! 🙂
